This design was created to show that Amnesty International is among the many organisations that are concerned about the anti-bikie legislation that has been introduced in Queensland and in other states as well. We have publicly condemned the laws and will continue to monitor their roll out. We are also currently conducting research into their impact on Queenslanders.
The Queensland laws severely restrict individuals' ability to enjoy their fundamental right to freedom of expression and association. The hoodies are an attempt to show how ridiculous the laws are and not designed to match any existing insignia. It is outrageous that police are harassing people for riding a motorbike or wearing a particular type of clothing.
These are the two articles from the Universal Declaration of Human Rights that this design refers to:
Article 7:
All are equal before the law and are entitled without any discrimination to equal protection of the law. All are entitled to equal protection against any discrimination in violation of this Declaration and against any incitement to such discrimination.
Article 20:
(1) Everyone has the right to freedom of peaceful assembly and association.
(2) No one may be compelled to belong to an association.
